The Irish Independent published an interview with Alpha-1 patient Stephen Smith on the 2nd of January. After seven unsuccessful calls Stephen finally received a successful double lung transplant in the Mater Hospital, Dublin in November 2013.

It is a proven genetic risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
