The Alpha One Foundation is delighted to announce the Annual Alpha-1 Conference will take place on:
Friday 24th October 2014,
commencing at 9.30 am
in Marino Institute of Education,
Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9.
We would like to invite all Alpha-1 patients and their families to attend. We would especially like to welcome newly diagnosed Alpha-1 individuals and their families. This year we are delighted to have a representative from the US Embassyopening our conference. Our special guest speaker is Mr. John Walsh, CEO of the US Alpha-1 Foundation and Alpha-1 patient. John is an inspiration to the Alpha-1 community around the world and has done incredible work to raise awareness and fund research into Alpha-1.
The exciting line-up of speakers includes Professor Gerry McElvaney, Alpha-1 specialist at Beaumont Hospital, Dr. Kevin Molloy, Alpha-1 researcher, and Mr. Damien Peelo from COPD Support Ireland. Marino Institute is easily accessed from the M50 and is situated on Griffith Avenue on the north side of the city .

Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a vital protein produced by the liver to protect the lungs. It provides protection from the harmful effects of infections and inhaled irritants, particularly tobacco smoke. It can be easily measured by a simple blood test.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic condition which, after cystic fibrosis, is the commonest genetic disorder in Ireland. It severely affects more than 15,000 people, with another 250,000 carriers also at risk of lung and liver disease on the island of Ireland. It is a proven genetic risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
