Beaumont Hospital became a tobacco-free campus from July 4th 2012 as the hospital moved to create a healthy, clean and safer environment for patients, staff and visitors.
The move to go tobacco free across the campus follows extensive work by a multi-disciplinary steering committee and working groups. The policy was designed in response to the ongoing concern about the harmful effects of tobacco use and smoking in a healthcare environment. The Alpha One Foundation welcomes this progressive development which will benefit all patients with lung conditions who attend Beaumont Hospital. In partcular, we are thankful to Alpha-1 patient Josephine McGuirk for participating in the health promotion campaign around the hospital campus. Hopefully other hospitals will follow suit in the months ahead.
Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a vital protein produced by the liver to protect the lungs. It provides protection from the harmful effects of infections and inhaled irritants, particularly tobacco smoke. It can be easily measured by a simple blood test.
